If you already have a business page on Facebook it’s almost a dead cert that you’re getting increasingly fed up with how few people are seeing your posts. Is it just you? No, it’s not, it’s the way Facebook works.
Facebook is a business, like yours and mine, and like us they need to make money. They make money by selling advertising, and they can only sell advertising if they have enough members for advertisers to advertise to.
Once you appreciate this, it becomes easy to understand that in order to keep the punters logging in to Facebook, it has to keep their news feeds interesting. After all, would you read your news feed if it wasn’t? I know I wouldn’t – in fact I spend a lot of time getting rid of stuff I don’t want to see.
Facebook tries to guess what is interesting by restricting the number of people who see your post when you first put it out there, usually to about 5% of the people who have Liked your page (though the percentage is more like 40% if you have posted a video). If anyone in that test audience starts to engage with your post by liking, commenting or sharing it, then Facebook starts to push it wider. Comments get more points than likes, and shares get more than comments. And if you can get shares on a video then the sky is your limit!
All you need to do is harness this little gem of information by creating interesting posts, preferably with images and videos. Do the research – see what sort of things your audience like and do more of them. And even though it’s your business page, don’t be afraid to be funny, or to show who you are – people like people. People don’t like businesses so much.
Just a few comments and shares and you should see you reach extending even beyond the people who have Liked your page.
